Split University Library is a general scientific library. Being the central library of the University, its primary goal is to collect materials required by the faculties located in Split, and to make them available to the public, providing proper conditions for their use.
From when it was founded, in 1903, a special emphasis was put on developing the Library's Regional collection, Dalmatica. It contains different materials about Split and the surrounding area, ensuring the preservation of literary heritage as one of the Library’s key objectives.
Moreover, many exhibitions, literary evenings, lectures and other events took place in the Library over the years: its rich public activities made it one of the centers of city’s cultural life.
With its extensive holdings, the Split University Library ranks as the second largest library in Croatia, after the Zagreb’s National and University Library: it holds approximately 400 000 volumes of books and about 12 000 periodical volumes, and its special collections contain a vast number of rare and valuable books, maps and atlases, sheet music, sound recordings and graphic material.
Throughout the century of its existence, this Library has played a significant role in the social and cultural life of Split, and Croatia. The new era will be marked by a brand new and impressive Library edifice, which is currently being built. |
Interlibrary Loans Service lends publications owned by the Split University Library to other libraries. It also provides photocopies of serial articles. Requests for ILL will be accepted from any national, university, public or special library within Croatia and internationally. |
